Jackson Ole Sapit, ACK's presiding Archbishop, shocked Kenyans on Sunday 12th when he took a bold step of banning key politicians from speaking at a church service.
The Anglican Churches of Kenya leader was presiding over the installation of Rose Okeno as the new Butere Diocese Bishop at Butere Secondary School in Kakamega County. Politicians including Raila Odinga and Musalia Mudavadi also came to grace the occasion.
Politicians who attend these events are usually given a little more attention than the rest of the crowd. It did seem, though, as if there was a sudden break from the ordinary.
In a shocking change of events, Ole Sapit announced that he would not allow any politician to speak to the gathering, arguing that it is not prudent to mix church matters with politically charged statements on the same stage.
"I know that most of you are members of the church, but because of where we are, I beg to be understood that we have to let the church be the church when it gathers," Ole Sapit said.
“So what I will do is this, I will read the names of all our members, whom we respect so much, leaders
of our society who have come to grace the occasion, and if they want to address the press, they will
address when the press when the service is ended and that’s going to be the norm from now on,”
The Anglican Archbishop added.
This comes at a time when the political trajectory of the country is heating up ahead of the 2022 general elections.

Great work

DeleteA very nice piece here. Regardless of the political times we are in, church and politics should be treated as separate entities by refraining politicians from using the church as a campaign platform
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteYou mean church mingling with politics inordinately is a big NO
